“…(as a journalist), I want to create an outlet for people to see themselves…”

“I felt completely trapped in that space because I definitely, I grew up in a, a household environment where I was raised to be a very narrow, specific kind of person. So you know, that straight A student. That very modest, perfect, respectful person and that also equated to heterosexuality apparently. was really scared because I was like, you know, I can’t be gay because that cancels out all those other things — that pureness. I tried to pray it away because I felt so trapped. I never had any romantic experiences in high school or anything. I really was more so concerned that people around me were comfortable and that I was pleasing my parents and being a person that they wanted me to be. So through my work (as a journalist), I want to create an outlet for people to see themselves and to see that their identity is not narrow and that it’s very fluid and flexible. And I really wish I had that.”
